I found out I wasnt going to Chicago and then Phil [Collins] called me himself, basically offering the Genesis gig. Carl Palmer: again great drummer but not a main composer in ELP or Asia. It was really cool. When we got to rehearsal, I didnt know about the stuff that was going on in Phils life. The vocalist is the frontman, he/she has to move around face the audience, etc and a drummer is normally attached to his kit. I was seriously intimidated. This is the live version of Inside Out, recorded in Berlin in 1990. In the meantime, they had brought in [drummer] Narada Michael Walden. His guys werent fun, so he hung out in our tent the whole time before the show. In fact, most of the names of the drummers appear almost always at the end of the credits in the album covers. During that same conversation, I said to him, As a matter of fact, I need to take a break from doing both. And of course, there was another drummer there and it was an audition. But doing it was really fun. We picked what we wanted from them and made something new. I guess I had clarity of what I hoped to accomplish. With that said, I love all of the Genesis albums from 1972-1977, including A Trick of the Tail and Seconds Out which both have Phil Collins on lead vocals. The news that he left didnt come out until 1996 or so. Long story short: Collins turned up in a bad mood for the 2010 "Going Back" tour and griped at Thompson because Thompson hadn't prepared the Motown drum parts in enough detail. When the audition came, I was absolutely up for it. Editors picks That stuff smokes. But at this point Id be curious to see it. He made Frank laugh and a big part of those days was humor. Steve saw it as a compromise joining the band. When Phil said that his 2004 tour was going to be his last one, did you believe him? Again, I think its fantastic that hes playing with his son. Hed teach me how to play along with albums and where to put the fill and how to sing along with the melody and not get lost in the solos and how to make it swing. Influenced by the likes of Max Roach, Art Blakey, Elvin Jones, and Tony Williams along with the popular music . Then it got weird because they got comfortable with two drummers playing. Not too many of them sing even backing vocals. When my mom showed me that letter I wrote in fourth grade where I had outlined I hadnt done everything in that letter, but so much of it had already happened it kind of blew me away. Even though he played with Brand X, he was not comfortable with soloing. Im constantly writing, constantly trying new stuff. Most of the drummers have musical studies, to make arrangements you need to read and write music, even if you don't make the arrangements, you need to read music in order to understand the new arrangements that bands do after every tour in old songs. Hes passed away now, but we were in about 10 or 12 bands together growing up. But when that whole tour was announced, Phil was very insistent that it was not going to be a big tour. I never really toured with an R&B band, but Id played it all my life. First of all, I arrived in California straight out of the hood in Baltimore. The whole band took Tony's side (There's no Genesis without Tony) instead of compromising, giving more songs to Steve, It's ridiculous that Your Own Special Way was in W&W instead of Steve's superior material. They had some really nice material they were promoting at the time [from their album One]. We didnt do a lot of shows, but at the very last show [at the Montreux Jazz Festival on July 1st, 2010], he wasnt the happiest hed ever been. Phil and I, from the very first rehearsal when he sat down and we started jamming together, we just locked, he said. "And so the horns would make a mistake and hed turn around and look at me! I was asked by Genesis's manager if I would go and photograph the band at a secret location in Surrey (which may have been Mike Rutherford's studio) and take some pictures while they rehearsed ahead of the Knebworth show in 1978. That was my introduction to that. Even the sax players who sometimes only play 3 notes or a solo in songs are more impotant than drummers in bands (it is the same in Jazz, not only in Rock bands). The very first tour was a tour of England. Has Phil talked to you at all in the past 10 years? Yes, some of his ballads are cheesy. It was Phils gig, obviously. Phil Collins is a top ten drummer, a good backing vocalistr, an average lead singer and a lousy songwritter, that's my opinion. He might have some fives and sevens instead of triplets, things like that. Yeah. I agree, one weak album, because GTR was a multi members enterproce that involved even Steve Howe, but it wa a disaster. The first couple of years, I pretty much put it together. It was really disturbing because, for the first two weeks, I could not follow a single conversation, he admitted. As it turned out, I wound up doing a little, brief drum-clinic tour down there in Australia. He was pretty disappointed. I certainly never dreamed it would go on and on like it did. There was quite a bit of Louis Jordan. It was a fun tour. I guess I should. I really admire his career, and his commitment to his FAMILY. Exactly. As of late though, I think Phil Collins has sold out, but not the with Genesis. How did he know you? For lack of a better word, they are really, really British. Alan White studied a bit of piano, but he is mainly self-taught as a drummer. They brought in Bill Bruford for that one tour [in 1976], but it was a fairly short tour.
